New regulation to protect rights of domestic workers

JEDDAH- The Council of Ministers has approved a new regulation stating that employers will be permanently banned from recruiting domestic labor if they violate the terms of agreement signed upon more than three consecutive times.

On August 26, 2013, the Saudi Cabinet approved the "Protection from Abuse" law. The law now makes domestic abuse illegal, punishable by one year in prison, and a fine of up to 50,000 riyals (or about $13,330).

The correction campaign to rectify the status of foreign workers in the Kingdom had its implications on the demand for steel, salesmen and distributors in the domestic steel sector say.
They said demand for steel declined by 50 percent following the departure of thousands of illegal workers out of the country

Saudi Arabia is considering turning to Sri Lanka  and India to meet a soaring local demand for domestic workers following labour disputes with  Philippines and Indonesia and a decision to suspend hiring maids from Ethiopia, foreign media reported.
