Doctors refuse cabinet’s request to suspend strike

 

Doctors are continuing to strike, despite a request by Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb on Sunday to suspend their partial strike for three months. Head of the committee coordinating the strike, Ahmed Shoosha, said: “We rejected the request”, adding that the strike “cannot be suspended” until doctors begin to see responses and concrete steps.

Alexandria transport workers launch partial strike

Workers of the Transport Authority in Alexandria launched a strike in Sidi Bishr’s public transportation garage Saturday demanding the application of the minimum income, their end of service bonuses, and a EGP 200 raise.

Doctors are continuing their industrial action

Rashwan Shaaban, Assistant Secretary-General of the Egyptian Doctors Syndicate, states the problem in a nutshell. “The strikes started in May and October 2012 and then again in January and February 2014 because the state of the health system and those who work in it are not satisfactory. In fact, the system is bad on both the economic and scientific levels. A newly appointed doctor earns just LE900, and on retirement his income is around LE3, 000.” How can the system not be in crisis, he asked.

Doctors strike back with escalatory decisions

The Doctors’ Syndicate have demanded the dismissal of Health Minister Maha Rabat because she “deliberately humiliates doctors and stands against their rights”. In a general assembly meeting on Friday, the Doctors’ Syndicate also decided to refer the minister to the disciplinary committee for investigations. Subsequently, the Ministry of Health said in a statement that the general assembly’s decisions constitute “political use of union work” and that the syndicate does not have the right to assign blame or investigate the minister, since the minister does not practice the profession.
